What should you do when your dog gets skunked?
The
warmer temperatures in spring and summer can mean an increased risk of
your dog encountering a skunk. Even in the citys your dog may still be
at risk of encountering such wildlife
If you live in the country or take your dog camping with you, there is a definite possibility that your dog may get skunked...
No, I don't mean skunked like you didn't catch any fish. I mean SKUNKED!
Forget the Tomato Juice, and the Lemon Juice baths, those are just old wives tales anyway...
This remedy even works on the fabrics your much loved doggie just used as a face towel to try to get that stench off of himself!
Even
if you live in the city, your dog may still be at risk of enocuntering
wildlife. The warmer weather in spring and summer brings these animals
out into backyards in their search for food to feed their spring babies.
Things You'll Need:
* hydrogen peroxide
* baking soda
* dish soap
* spray bottle
* really smelly dog!
Skunks can be found just about everywhere, even in the city so it never hurts to be prepared
Ok
your out camping with your dog and he runs back to the campsite (forget
the fact that you should never let your dog out of your sight when you
are not at home) He jumps into the camper and begins rolling and
rubbing his face all over your bunk and you recognise that distinctive
smell of SKUNK!!!!!
Now what do you do?
Break out the emergency
kit and grab the bottle of hydrogen Peroxide, then get the baking soda
and dish soap together and I will tell you how to make a de-skunking
spray.
I'm hiding right here where that skunk can't find me again!
First get the skunked doggie off your bunk and out from under your blankets...
Take him outside and tie him securely to a tree
You
will mix 10 parts hydrogen peroxide (a part is simply any measurement
you wish to use, just use it for all ingredients) With 1 part baking
soda and a dash of dawn dishwashing soap.
Be sure to mix well and give time for the baking soda to melt into the peroxide and soap.
Pour contents into a spray bottle and spray it liberally over dogs DRY coat. Use caution NOT to get it into the dogs eyes. You can use a sponge to wipe solution onto the fur of the dogs face and ears.
Take dog outside and allow the coat to air dry.
Apply solution to your bunk and bedding and take them outside to air dry as well.
soapy doggie
For
really serious Skunkings you may need to repeat the application on your
dog. If you do, you should wait about 4 or 5 minutes and then rinse the
solution off well to prevent your dogs coat from getting sticky.
